Dr. Gaurav Kharya — Consultant and Head of Pediatric Hematology in Delhi NCR

Dr. Gaurav Kharya is Consultant and Head of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and BMT at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi NCR, with more than 18 years of experience. His qualifications are MBBS, MD, DM and a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology and BMT.

His listed procedures are narrow and deliberate: pediatric bone marrow transplant, sickle cell disease, thalassemia and aplastic anemia treatment. All three of those conditions are non-malignant marrow disorders, and all three are curable by transplant. That is a transplant practice built around giving children a definitive end to a lifelong disease rather than a lifelong treatment schedule.

His training stacks four qualifications from four institutions. He read MBBS at University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital in Delhi, took MD in pediatrics at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, then a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology and BMT at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, and DM in clinical hematology at AIIMS in New Delhi. He has also trained as an observer at The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, two of the centres where marrow transplantation was developed and refined.

His record states that he has performed over 900 transplants, more than 600 of them for patients with sickle cell disease, and that he is recognised among the top bone marrow transplant specialists in India. He is also an active contributor to research on cell and gene therapy product development in India.
